Hookuaaina Rebuilding Lives From The Ground Up

A Message From Our Executive Director

Aloha mai kākou, A few days after Thanksgiving, I sat overlooking the loʻi reflecting on all the things I am thankful for. My marriage to Michele, our four children, and our collective health and well being jumped out first. Included with this is the life we live, the work we do with Hoʻokuaʻāina, and the...

Education Program 2018

ʻAʻohe pau ka ʻike i ka hālau hoʻokahi.* #203 All knowledge is not learned in one school. [One can learn from many sources.] Welina me ke aloha kākou. In this makahiki season, it is only fitting that we take time to look back and reflect on where we have been over this past year. It’s...

Kūkuluhou Mentoring Program 2018

Itʻs amazing to think that weʻve been working with the boys from Ke Kama Pono, a residential home for challenged boys, for three years now. While time sure flies, attempting to remember all the young men we have built relationships with over that period is challenging. Over 100 boys from Ke Kama Pono have been...

The remainder was sold as poi or kalo paʻa. Due to large harvests early on...

Rurutu Cultural Exchange

In July 2018, 15 staff from the Ho’okua’āina ʻohana will embark upon a journey to gain ancestoral knowledge and make connections with our brothers and sisters in Rurutu, a small island in French Polynesia. For 2 weeks we will be immersed with a people who still live and practice the way of their ancestors uninterrupted for over 2000 years. Their kalo traditions are almost identical to Hawaii. We go there in search of lost ancient knowledge and important cultural connections vital to us as we search the past to find answers for our future. We humbly ask that you support us on this journey.

The Luxury of Boredom

Here we are, already at the end of the first month of what promises to be another fantastic year. 2017 was a booming year for Hoʻokuaʻāina. During Christmas break, as a staff, we took a much-needed rest for 2 weeks from groups, harvest, production, and just all the normal day to day operations of our...
