Thank you for planning your visit to Hoʻokuaʻāina at Kapalai! We are looking forward to spending the day with you. Here is some information to make your day in the loʻi a memorable experience!
in preparation for your visit
things to expect
Weather: located in the heart of Maunawili, the weather can change frequently in our loʻi. You might experience hot sun or pouring rain. Be prepared for both.
Wildlife: the loʻi is a natural, spring-fed wetland with all kinds of wildlife. Expect to encounter tadpoles, guppies, frogs and a variety of beautiful bird species.
Working Conditions: the work can be physically challenging and the mud is deep. Make sure to stay hydrated and assess your own health while working.

An adventurous spirit
Towel
Old and comfortable clothes you do not mind getting dirty (shorts and t-shirt)
Old swimsuits under your clothes makes rinsing off easy for girls
Clean change of clothes
Bag for wet clothes
Water
Hat
Shoes – Slippers are the best since we work barefoot in the loʻi
Sunscreen - Reef safe is acceptable
Bug repellent is NOT necessary, but if needed, please use all-natural ingredients
during your visit
a typical day with hoʻokuaʻāina
8:15-8:25am (unless other arrangements have been made) - Arrive and meet under the tent.
8:30-9am - Circle time, manaʻo o ka lā (thought of the day) & protocol
9am-11:30am - Activity in the lo’i
11:30-Noon - Rinse off and closing circle
We ask that all participants arrive on time and be present at the start of our day unless other arrangements have been made. Participation in the opening circle is very important. However, we are flexible and understand schedules vary so please communicate if you need to make other arrangements.

ADDRESS: 916E AULOA RD, KAILUA, HI 96734
For google maps enter 916 D Auloa Rd. to find our shared driveway with 916 C & D. Drive all the way back, down the gravel road, to the green containers.
Follow the signs and drive down the gravel road to the green container shed where you will be directed to park.
Very Important - DRIVEWAY IS SHARED with houses 916 C & D. Do not stop and inquire at any of our neighbors’ houses at 916A, B, C or D and please be respectful as you drive or walk in and out.
ARRIVING BY CAR: Drive down the gravel road to the shed where you will be guided to park. We have limited parking on site so please carpool. There is street parking along Auloa Rd. and in the surrounding neighborhood.
ARRIVING BY BUS: Drop off is at Maunawili Neighborhood Park: 962 Maunawili Rd, Kailua, HI 96734. Because of limited facilities, please have everyone use the bathroom at the park prior to walking over and beginning the activity.
